SD40 and SD38 Helper Units

From https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrzW2ioI6pY&list=WL&index=5

On Sand Patch Grade, SD40 and SD38 aren't capable of remote control DPU. They are capable of multiple unit as coupled units only. When used as helpers, they need a crew to operate. The driver of the helper units is known as 'Hank'.

The theory is that Hank will have control over all functions of the helper units, except the train brake which is controlled by the main driver (you). The set up of units is as follows (after doing what the game wants you to do):

Head End Driven Units

Lead Unit

  1. Number lights on (rear panel)
  2. Radio Head of Train Device (HOTD) fuse on in the fuse cabinet
  3. Warning devices on
  4. Reverser handle in
  5. Gen field, engine run and fuel switches on
  6. Lights on
  7. M2U lead or dead
  8. Cutout valve set to freight
  9. Ditch lights on
  10. Banking radio on (the game misses this instruction!)

Lead Coupled Unit(s)

  1. Engine run, gen field and fuel pump all off - this control stand is not being used.
  2. Reverser handle out
  3. Cut out valve cut out
  4. Train brake handle off
  5. M2U traili (so independent brake responds to lead unit)
  6. Banking comm off
  7. Radio HOTD off (in cabinet)

Helper Units

The driven (lead) helper unit is set up as a normal lead unit, except that the main brake is cut out with the brake set at handle off. It needs to have the radio/end of train unit switch on in the fuse cabinet, but banking radio is not turned on as Hank will not be in control of the radio. So:

Lead Unit

  1. Engine number lights off (rear top panel)
  2. Radio and HOTD on (so Hank can hear us)
  3. Banking comm off
  4. Warning devices off (we can't be sure Hank will acknowledge alarms)
  5. Lights off
  6. Engine run, generator field and fuel switches on
  7. Reverser handle in
  8. Cutout valve cut out
  9. Train brake to handle off
  10. M2U to lead (to control any coupled locos independent brakes) - which we can control via camera 3 pretending to be Hank.

Helper Coupled Unit(s)

  1. Engine run, gen field and fuel pump all off - this control stand is not being used.
  2. Reverser handle out
  3. Cut out valve cut out
  4. Train brake handle off
  5. M2U traili (so independent brake responds to lead unit)
  6. Banking comm off
  7. Radio HOTD off (in cabinet)
